I'm drooling--I'm DROOLING. There's no way on this earth that I could explain away one on my Yuba River Sub, but the more I see of it, the more I think I'll come up with SOME kind of an excuse, LOL!
That's a HUNKER of a locomotive.

No smoke from the tender exhaust? Or did the engineer have the capability to cut out the rear engine when running light?
Now, how do I achieve that effect, three eight-coupled steam engines operating together? I could buy a (totally inappropriate for my operating scheme) Triplex. Or, I could do what my prototype did and triple-head identical 2-8-2s.
I already own the 2-8-2s.

Wants: 1. high-quality, sound equipped, SD40-2s, C636s, C30-7s, and F-units in BN. As for ones that don't cost an arm and a leg, that's out of the question....
2. An end to the limited-production and other crap that makes models harder to get and more expensive.
Well, first of all, I'd have to special order it--one of my LHS's out here has been burned a little too often by MTH (No, I DIDN'T inquire why) and the other deals mostly in railroads West of the Mississippi (well, DUH, we ARE in California, LOL!) and if I'm going to order something like that, I'd rather deal locally. So, I'm going to have to think about that. But you know, funny thing--in the Rio Grande's re-numbering of their loco series in the 1920's, they DID leave the 3000 series open--that's how I was able to sneak in my 'never was' 3900 Yellowstones. Hm. A 3000-3100 or 3200 series Triplex? Okay, just ONE? I mean, Rio Grande wasn't afraid to experiment a little--so why not a Triplex to help haul coal over Soldier Summit?
Oboy, I'm fantasizing. But that is sure one HUNKER of a loco!
Even if I AM strictly DC.
It looks as if MTH has done an excellent job of this engine. It would be great to have one just to be the envy of visitors. However, it is not to be for me, just as the Big Boy is not to be. I am at the point where I am concentrating more, or spiraling inwards toward, one or two railroads. No point is any diversions as I see it.
Also, the smoke....nope, just doesn't work for me. Wrong colour, too wispy as it wafts around the engine unrealistically. The timing is just excellent...hard to beat what MTH has done with it, but the smoke itself can't get past my hokey filter. (Sorry if my words get anyone's dander up...not intending to goad or pick an argument, just saying how I feel about it...the engine doesn't matter, nor the manufacturer.)

I like my 2-8-2+2-8-0 duplex (a Mikado with a Consolidation under the tender). It has sixteen powered drivers, the same as the subject model where the tender's drivers are just along for the ride.

I'm waiting for one in N scale just like that! Come on MTH, don't disappoint me!
MTH O gauge models have always impressed me, and I've always been impressed with the selection of less-common prototypes they have offered (turbines, large electrics, PRR duplexii, and the Coors Light Silver Bullet to name a few), and the Triplex seems to be a winner everytime! And one of my favorites...

Oh come on...... Hokey looking smoke on a very toy-like layout. Beautiful looking loco but not exactly something that is going to look or smell good on an HO layout unless you can turn off the smoke. As far as sound, it sounds the same as all other HO steam locos...about 2 octaves off. I am not impressed. And to use all the whistles and bells, you have to buy into Mikes proprietory non-DCC system.
I still think MTH should stick to "O" scale...... Something he does extremely well.

Agreed. You never get a good side shot of the loco running; always from the rear, going away, behind scenery, you know.
