HOW DO YOU KNOW WHEN YOU ARE HOOKED???
Posted by Anonymous on Friday, February 20, 2004 3:54 PM

It happened to me this morning. As I was driving for home I saw a train running parallel to my left. It was snowy so I had to watch the road pretty good and found myself wishing I was the first car in line at the crossing so I could have had a nice long leisurely look at everything. Instead I was forced to sneak peaks and commit to memory any interesting cars or graffiti I saw. I also (to my disbelief) was totally bummed I didn't get to see what engines were pulling the train.

In the middle of all of this I had a "lightbulb" moment.....LOL......I was hooked.

I guess a year of living with a train "freak"(self-admitted), it finally rubbed off.

I recall a conversation earlier in our relationship where he asked if I liked trains and I remember saying something along the lines of ..."as long as it isn't blocking my path" and he said "oh.....one of those."

Just thought I would share my revelation with you guys.

Must be love! Run with it!![;)]

My wife now predicts weather for fun and as I said before she's saying words like Mikado, Consolidiation but hasn't said Big Boy yet! Don't worry she has 24 other numbers to choose from!

Yep. I'd say you are hooked. My wife thinks I'm nuts when I slow down for crossings in the hope the gates will come down.
Enjoy

I knew I was hooked when my son was born and my dad dragged me down to the local hobby store and bought $200.00 bucks worth of HO scale trains and told me to build my son a layout!! My son is 24 now and has nothing for the hobby. However, my 23 yr old daughter is the one that critiques my HO scale work![:D] Welcome to that fraternity that has trains on the brain![:)]

When I first married my wife she didn't care for trains but now after a few years of following me to train shows and watching the trains run behind our house she's been getting intersted. She even suggested that next time we travel to Florida to see my parrents that we should take the train.

you are hooked. i was kind of the same way. i went to a friends house and saw his trains and thought i have to start. so the following monday in school a train came through town and i had a perfect view of the tracks from my desk. my mind wandered and i just watched the whole train. i had no clue what anything was then or now but i love trains. from that moment i've been hooked.

It's a fatal disease Lady. Once caught, there is no cure. Some people have been known to live well into their eighties suffering to catch a glimpse of a train. I pity you to have been hit at such a young age. There is only one medication that can make this less painful, you must start immediately to build a layout of your own. It's the only thing that will help.

I have been hooked since- - - - -geez, I guess it was the Lionel train set under the Christmas tree when I was 5 or 6 (1950's!). Now I am working on my fourth or fifth layout, the 2nd one in N scale, have been photographing trains since 1971, and I really want to know where the heck you were when you were driving parallel with the train because I want to go there and take photographs the next time it snows! So please respond in some future response??

I think she saw the Minnesota Commercial heading north in the Arden Hills area near 694 and Snelling.

Read my topic entitled Busted!! She was with me yesterday when that happened, and we had just gone to lunch at the depot in St Paul. The weather was so crummy in the morning, that she couldn't get to her job in St Cloud, so she turned around and came home, and that's when she saw it. While we were sitting at lunch, she mentioned this to me, and I suggested that she share it. Email me if you want more details.

By the way Lupo, we have two computers, so we can both be on, NO FIGHTING.[:D]

This hobby seems to sneak up on peaple sometimes.

There is no such thing as a bad day of railfanning. So many trains, so little time.

Thank You All For The Welcome.

I have been a member for a short while now and have listened to Big_Boy talk about alot of you for much longer[;)]

I really enjoy hearing about everyone else's "lightbulb moment".

FERGMEISTER-Thanks Ferg-we seem to be rolling right along. [swg]

LUPO-what we probably will fight over now is which one has to do the driving while the other looks out for the trains[^]

SCOTTYDOG-thanks for the prescription--I'll take 2 of his cars and post in the morning and tell you if I survived [:P]

IRENEE-Big_Boy had the location just right. Go south on snelling off of 694 and I believe it is CTY RD E? that you get off on. You want to take the first exit on your right. Go right on E? and you will be running parrallel. There is a McDonalds on your left if you are going in the right direction. Keep going on E? and you will encounter stoplights. I know for sure the tracks intersect at Lexington and Victoria. I never really payed attention until now but the crossing at Victoria I think has a public place you could stop and park and be able to take pic's and watch. My email is posted on my profile email me if you would like. It is nice to see some estrogen popping out on the forum[:D].

BNSFNUT-too true , could have knocked me over when I had my revelation [:O]

thanks again all-Tammy

Part of it was saturation carpet bombing ....LOL. With his layout in progress and him being on the forum and telling me about everyone he was talking to.

He didn't force it on me or I probably never would have gotten in to it.

Also once he knew that I had an interest he didn't expect me to be interested in everything all the time.

I knew he loved it so I think part of it started with me just noticing stuff I knew he would be interested in. Like an old oil can in a junk shop since he has some signage and lanterns. The oil can was a bust but my awareness was up.

Then it turned from looking just to tell him about it to looking cause I wanted to see it for myself ----if that makes sense.

Passion sometimes just rubs off.
