(N Scale) DPM Gold 'Woods Furniture' Kit..
Posted by nscale1969 on Monday, April 7, 2008 5:36 PM

Hello all,

I am finally taking some vacation next week and will actually have some time to work on train stuff! Smile [:)] That being said, I recently bought DPM's 'Woods Furniture' kit at my LHS and was wondering if anyone here has experience with it and could share any tips, tricks or 'gotchas' they may have encountered when putting it all together...

Thanks!

Robert

DPM kits typically go together pretty smoothly, but this is pretty large one.  I'd suggest you get some square strip styrene to reinforce the corners, and make sure you sand the wall edges where they join together to make sure you get a good seal.

I also like to paint everthing before assembly.  First I'll spray the inside of the walls flat black to prevent light leaks (I like to light my structures), then I turn it over and shoot the exteriors.  One trick I've used is to paint the wall first, and let it dry over night.  Then using clear packing tape, and mask the entire wall.  I use a sharp #11 Xacto to carefully trim the tape away from each window.  Once their all clear, take your trim color and spray the window frames.  This saves a ton of time on hand painting all those sashes.  Pull the tape off, touch up where you need to, and start your assembly.

I also use CA adhesive (crazy glue) to install the acetate "glass" on the inside.  Regular styrene cement will dissolve the black paint on the interior of the wall, creating potentially translucent spots when the lights are on.

That's how I did that structure.

The only other trick I can offer is to take your time, go one step at a time, and make sure you square everything up.

Thanks Lee,

I had planned to sand corners and pre-spray but the masking and respraying for the sills you mention is a great idea..A serious time and frustration saver...

Might I ask which type of painters tape you use? I have some generic blue painters tape here at the house but it may not be the best for the situation...

Thx again.
