Youtube Revised SUCCESS!!!
Posted by loathar on Friday, December 28, 2007 7:49 PM

I'm trying to upload some train videos I took and need some pointers. I took these with my digital camera. Quick Time video 640x480. Can I use quick time format or do I need to convert it to another format? If so, does anyone have a link to any free video converting/editing software?

I get to the point where I click "upload video" and get the message "Video uploading. Be patient. You will get a finished prompt"  Seems like a real long time with no action. It's a 2 minute video (80 megs) I'm on DSL. Waited about 20 minutes with no action. Any hints? Should it take 20-30 minutes on DSL?

QuickTime is perfect, because you are uploading video it will take F....O.....R....E.....V....E.....R! I would let it sit for an hour or so and see what happens.

This one took over four hours to upload.

Just be patient. Find something else to do in the meantime.

It depends on your upload speed. Do you know what you upstream rating is? 80 mb would take at least 30 mins. for me, and I have a fast cable connection.

OK...Steemtrayn-Nice coal drag!

Guilfordguy-Shock [:O] Is that a web page or just a free Youtube page? How did you make that? (Background and menus and all) Holy CRAP! That's NICE!
I found a free converter (Any Video Converter) What's a good editing program? (hopefully free)

I think I have a copy of Quicktime Pro around some where. Is that any good? I'd like to be able to do videos of still jpegs like you did. (fade, captions, add audio)

I'm a complete newb at video. (sorry for all the questions...)

When I do a speed test, it reads around 750 kbps down and 350kbps up. When I download a file it tops out at around 120 kbps steady. I don't know the reason for this.Confused [%-)]

I just tested mine, and the best was about 12mb download, 1.2mb up. You generally won't see your entire bandwidth speed taken up by a single download, and it's also dependent on the speed of the server you're downloading from. At any rate, your upload time is going to be significant. Assuming the YouTube uploader isn't hanging (and sometimes it does) I'd let it go overnight.

Btw, you can customize your the your profile page in your account settings. There's options to change colors, or upload a background image.

80 Megabytes x 8 bits per byte = 640 Megabits x 1000 kilobits per megabit = 640,000kbits

640,000 kbits / 350 kbits per sec =  1829 seconds +-    This is about half an hour at best. Likely they "accept" your file at an even lower speed.

Hope that this is helpful.

Check your "all programs" search, and see if you have Microsoft Movie Maker.  It converts raw video, which creates HUGE files, to .wmv, which is compressed and uploads in a hurry.  You can also edit your clips together and add sound effects and titles.

I put this together in about an hour, and uploaded to Youtube in minutes.

Windows Movie Maker doesn't support Quicktime files.

No, but what I just did was use that "All Video Converter" and converted Quick Time to a different format. Then I could put it in Windows movie maker. Added fade effects, sound track and credits. When I saved it, it compressed it down to 25 meg wmv file. Still pretty good quality considering I'm doing this with a $100 digital camera.Big Smile [:D] Gonna try and upload it now.
Only took me about a half hour to figure all that out and do it!

Another thing that will shorten your upload time is to remove all the useless portions of the video.

For example: if the video is of a train passing;

Trim off the beginning few seconds (or minutes) that does not have the train in it, including the scenes from the family reunion karaoke session the week before you went train watching.
Cut anything at the end after the train is gone, including the scenes of your kid learning to ride the bicycle the week after you went train watching.
Remove scenes where the autofocus of the camera has gone nuts and nothing is recognizable anyway.
Delete the short segments where an idiot bystander utters a vulgar curse or a child is screaming louder than the train whistle.
Delete fast pans that are just a blurr.
Remove the segments where you forgot that you were making a video and while you were looking with both eyes, the camera strayed to a scene of the sky or your foot.
Remove the segments where you got the record function out of sync and recorded the ground as you walked to a good spot, and shut off the record function as you raised the camera to record the scene.

Taking all the junk out of the video will shorten your upload time considerably... If everybody followed those guidelines, YouTube would need half the disk space to store the videos they already have (but then, most of the videos that are there wouldn't have been uploaded at all!)

The very best upload formats for the YouTube video encoder is .mp4 or .wmv ... Quicktime is okay as long as it's the .mp4 format. The .mov quicktime format will pixelate more.

The .mp4 or .wmv formats, when encoded at about 1 mbps will upload and produce very clean videos on YouTube.

I guess when it takes the longest...I am the raining champ! I am ALS2001 on Youtube, and most of my videos are over 9 minutes long. It takes on average 9-10 hours to upload just ONE video! So I usually do it while I sleep

Thanks Joe. That's what Windows Movie Maker converted it to after I edited it. Really didn't lose much quality. Now I just have to get the layout to the point where it's worthy of more videos!Smile [:)]

I've used the settings as described in this video for quicktime videos with good results:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XqHDPgJO6k0

For shorter videos, I'll bump up the data rate a little.

Here's a video encoded this way:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Izcxnk31Z1c

Hopefully youtube will move to a better video system soon.  They were supposed to move to h.264 to accommodate the iPhone, but so far it's just the same old flash video crap.Dead [xx(]
