XTrkCAD benchwork
Posted by Lillen on Thursday, December 27, 2007 6:07 AM

I've downloaded XTrkCAD, now I can not figure out how to make the bench work so that I have something to lay the track on. Also, I can not find any Atlas #8 turnouts.  Anyone who can help me with this, especially the first issue. I assume I can use the #6 until someone makes #8's.

Thanks, Magnus

Unless otherwise mentioned it's HO and about the 50's. Magnus

Here's what I did. I used the 'create straight line" tool to create the benchwork. You can also click on a line you've created and change the size and color of it too. I don't think the program has #8 turnouts. Hope that helps?

Depends on what you mean by "benchwork". Leftmost tool on the tool bar makes four kinds of straight lines - one of them is "draw table edge", one is "create benchwork" (ie beams). Draw beam, right click on it, select lumber dimensions.

No reason in the whole wide world why you would need to draw in benchwork before you draw tracks. The program has layers - you put your tracks in one layer, structures (buildings etc) and scenery in another, benchwork in a third - and so on and so forth.

This is not physical - your tracks won't crash to the ground if you don't build benchwork first.

Not all turnouts are included in the parameter files you download with the program. You find more parameter files and tips at Yahoo group: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/XTrkCad/

Magnus,

Unless you want to design and show the bencwork as part of your layout design, there's no need to create something 'to lay the track on'. Look on the toolbar for a button with a line at a 45 degree angle. If you click that button, a drop down menu appears and you can select "Draw Benchwork". You can then select the size of the lumber and the orientation of the lumber. Those selections are down at the bottom of the screen after you select "Draw Benchwork".

I hope this helps,

Don Z.

Sorry for the misunderstanding guys. My language failed me here. What I meant with bench work was actually the tabletops(plywood sheets) that the track is suppose to be built upon.

Sorry for the confusion.

Thanks for the advice guys,

Du trenger ikke å tegne inn plata før du tegner spor. Men hvis du vil vise omrisset av plata, så bruker du "Draw Table Edge" - drop-down pil på knappen helt til venstre på verktøylinja.

(English: You don't have to draw in the table edge before you draw tracks. But if you want to indicate where the table edge will be, just use the Draw Table Edge choice on the drop down arrow on the leftmost tool icon on the toolbar).

There are #8 turnouts in Xtrkcad, just not Atlas #8s. They are under the NMRA parameter files, Shinohara's/Walthers parameters, and probably several others. However if you want an Atlas turnout, get one, measure it and use the turnout builder in Xtrkcad to make your own "Atlas" and then save it to Atlas's parameter file, and it will be there every time you need it.

Hi, thanks for the help.  Yeah I know I do not need the table but since that is more important to me right now then the actual track I do need it if you get my point. Big Smile [:D]

The reason being is that I'm planning to build a train room(house) and I need to know the best dimensions before I get busy. Thus the emphasize on bench work.

I have another question. How do you erase a single piece of track. And is there a way to erase lines that I have drawn for the plywood sheets?

Magnus,

Find the button on the toolbar that has a red arrow and a piece of track. Click it, then click on anything you want to remove. That item will turn a different color, then hit your 'Delete' key. Problem solved.

Thank you very much. I will try this. It's quite a good program I think.

Very impressive program especially considering the cost of it and the community behind it compared to the other programs I've looked at.
