It would help if the scale was specified!
But the Old Dog would say none of the above. Take that 48" by 96" and saw it into 3 16" by 96" to get a "good" sized HO switching layout. Or cut one of the 16" by 96" sections to 2 16" by 48" and build a donut. Maybe 48" by 64" plus a 16" by 48" el. For N scale, 2 24" by 96" would allow for better designs. Bend the rules!
Have fun

Correct. Only two layout (out of 13) actually features a roundhouse in their sketch - Newport Northern (maybe), and Whisper River (which has a roundhouse on the narrow gauge part of the layout). "Rader Authority of Transit (RAT Lines)" features a roundtable, but not a roundhouse.
Also, of the 9 layouts stebby didn't like enough to initially rate any of them fifth place, seven had continuous run ("Becket and Berkshire", "Newport Northern", "Loup Creek", "Sierra Mesa South-western", "Loopy Bridge and Terminal", "Rader Authority of Transit" and "Whisper River").
Only "Helix Mountain" and "Selkirk and Pacific" does not have a continuous run option.
But that doesn't matter - you can use any criteria you like to select the five layouts you think are best (or "least bad" ).
As of right now, 42 people have voted. If you are one of those who haven't voted yet, why not consider having a look at the layouts (link in SpaceMouse's initial post, and repeated below), and then posting your list of 5 top layouts ?

I appreciate the "compliment;" I went for simplicity in my design, and was really mainly interested in allowing for a continous run of one train, while the person running the layout could switch around some cars at the same time. Also, with the passing track at the station at the top, a small passenger train could be stopped at the station while a freight moves past.
I wasn't shooting for extreme ops or realism, but hopefully some functionality considering the size of the layout. Also, you could have a pretty good size town scene and industry scene on the same layout
This has been a fun contest to watch so far.

Please do take it as a compliment as you are right, simplicity has it's virtues. Which is why I passed by some of the other plans that included a lot more trackage. They just looked too cluttered to me. I like to see a little separation between track. It's an unfortunate prejudice I have developed after 20+ years in that other, smaller, scale.
So what does anyone think the possibilites are that our "winner", who ever it is, will become MR's next project railroad? It would be fun to see somone actually attempt to build some of these designs.
I have figured out what is wrong with my brain! On the left side nothing works right, and on the right side there is nothing left!

xPD:
The Bus acknowledges the Old Dog, but replies that he has tried purely switching layouts and did not have as much fun, and that the 8 x 8 ell would actually not have fit his space as well as the 4 x 8 does. The doughnut would have been better, but still have occupied too much room, as the operating point could not have been coincident with workbench access, unless I wrapped the doughnut around the brick pillar my 4 x 8 sits against...but then it would have interfered with the furnace. I started thinking about this and then I realized I was doing it again - thinkin' when I could be railroadin'. Up went the 4 x 8.
(I did build it in four sections. I can split it and add some sections if I do want a doughnut in the future, so we did do some thinkin'.)
However, the admonition to have fun is being strictly followed, and the V & E bends rules nearly as often as we bend iron.

The Whisper River was an actual layout (obviously from the photos), and the RAT lines is still currently a real layout (photos exsit somewhere and not in digital format). I don't know how many of the others have any existence in reality.
TZ:
The V & E exists and operates daily. It has been elaborated somewhat, but the basic plan is the same. The scenery, however, is completely MGA.

In case of a recount will Hanging Chads count ?

Hanging Chad problably would be unfair, he is innocent (this time). Besides, I counted all votes, including those where the voters intent could only be discerned by looking at hanging and pregnant electrons
Voting results have been mailed off to SpaceMouse. No doubt he will post them when ready.
Btw - it is an annoying feature of the web forum that when you try to quote a user which has an "&" in their name, the system insists on you having "non-matched blocks". My apology for mangling your name, C&O!

You contact customer service, but I am having a heck of a time finding the link. If you log out, and then go to the login page, there is a link to them there, but that seems silly!
