4-8-2 HO Light Mountain Bachman -- Remove Boiler?
Posted by Anonymous on Monday, January 12, 2004 4:04 PM
I have a unlettered Bachman 4-8-2 HO Light Mountain and I would like to remove the boiler for painting without breaking it. The parts diagram does not make it apparent how to do this. I found the screw under the front pilot but cannot tell how boiler is attached in the back below the crew cab ( even after removing the trailing truck). I have painted several steam engines before but this has be baffled.

HELP Please.

This is taken from John Pryke's article in the Sept. 2003 MR. I haven't had my Lt. Mountains apart yet for detailing and paint but I'm sure it will work.

1. Remove the leading and trailing trucks
2. Remove the drawbar
3. Pull the pilot deck ladders and boiler sway braces away from the boiler
4.Pull the power reverse away from the valve gear crank
5. Pull the back of the frame down and to the rear of the engine. The boiler should slide of the weight.
6. Remove the screw just in front of the drawbar mount. The top of the weight will now separate from the drivers and frame.

Hope this helps,
Tom Watkins
