IIRC, the Master Mechanic who devised this (insert descriptive noun of choice) received a U.S. Patent for it, based largely on having the "backward" boiler set on a "cylinders forward" frame.
By way of contrast, the SP cab forwards were simply conventional locomotives running cylinders to the rear. Replacing their swinging trailing trucks with pivoting trucks under the cab was their only concession to being routinely run 'in reverse,' a characteristic they share with every dual-directional tank loco with a two or more axle truck under the bunker.
