NYC Westside Hudson has sound!
Posted by cats think well of me on Tuesday, June 14, 2022 11:26 AM

Hi all,

Here are a couple videos of my Westside J3a Hudson that now has a Tsunami2 TSU-2200 sound decoder, two Scale Sound Systems speakers, one in tender and one in boiler, plus LED front headlight in action. I've since tweaked some CVs and I'm open to trying out various CV settings. I took the short video with an iPhone 11 and the longer one with an iPad mini 4. I'll use the iPhone11 for future videos as the quality is a good bit better, although the HD settings on YouTube helped a lot for both.

Very nice, both the installation and the loco itself.  Wow!  Cool

Have you sampled all the files for the whistle?  I think you might find one that's a bit closer to the examples of the Hudson whistles I have heard on audio from the day.  It should be a bit more shrieky, higher pitched, but not much.

Love the roller bearing rods.

You can add echo and reverb to the whistle. youtube video from Soundtraxx:

  Hi Alvie

Nice looking loco. Sounds good too. Did your Westside come with a can motor or did you convert to a can motor?

Pete,

Just saw this comment and the model came with a Canon "red cap" 5-pole can motor which worked pretty well, but I had it upgraded to a Canon EN-22 motor and Boo-Rim 36:1 gearbox and it's been a significant improvement.

Where are you able to source Boo-Rim gearboxes?

The gentleman who did the upgrade work on the mechanism had one on hand, plus the motor, and other parts.

Darn, I have never seen one for sale seperately.

Your locomotive sure looks like it runs nicely.

Kevin, American Scale Models lists one, not sure how of the ratio (probably 36:1). You'd also need to convert the fraction dims listed on the website to metric to see it matches up.

I have used a NWSL gearbox on my Sunset I1sa 2-10-0 using the original can motor. Works great and is a lot more silent than the original.

Nice locomotive. Hope it brings years of faithful service to you.

Kevin, American Scale Models lists one.

Thanks for that lead. It lists the axle diameter as 7/64", but I believe the model I have that could use a gearbox has a 1/8" axle.

I have a single-idler NWSL gearbox on-hand that I bought for this model. It does not work very smoothy when I tested it from the package. I was going to open it up and run toothpaste through it.

Did your run more smoothly after the wheels were attached to the axle?

  Kevin.

The NWSL gear box runs smoothly right out of the box/bag. I had to press the gear on the 3mm axle. Synthetic grease on the bearings and gears.

The new motor and gearbox, plus replacing the silicon tube with a U-joint, and a Boo-Rim motor mount made for a signficantly smoother running and quieter model. I've added moldable lead in various places to help with pulling power and balance. It pulled, with a bit of slipping on the grades on my club's layout, 16 passenger cars of various kinds including two brass models with the original brass trucks. I added a bit of weight, moldable lead, up front on the engine since taking this video.

The rocks around the tunnel portal are extremely well done. Great scene.

Kevin,

I don't know who at the club did the scenery work but there are some quite talented people who did good work. I only did the train and the video.
