Rapido Ditch Light wires 102082 Again
Posted by CPbuff on Saturday, January 15, 2022 5:22 PM

Still having troubles with the wires on the rapido ditch lights! I put more than enough heat on the wires Im trying solder but I find that the flux is the only thing holding the wire onto the resistor wire! The heat doesnt melt any insulation off that I can see and wireis  smaller than 30AWG and cant be stripped ! how do I solder these wires? Any further ideas?

I recommend doing a search for "how do you strip magnet wire"

Then practice on scrap until you're happy.

The most common suggestions are not to scrape but, rather, to use heat such as a soldering iron, cigarette lighter, a match or a butane fireplace lighter.

First dip the tip of the wire in some soldering paste. Then get a good sized blob of solder on the tip of your iron and slowly feed the wire into the molten solder. It will easily burn off the coating and tin the wire at the same time.

I use the same method as Mark described.  It cooks off the thin insulated coating of the magnet wire and tins it so that it's nice & shiny.  If you are using 34 AWG, a 700oF soldering iron is hot enough to acccomplish that.

The only proper way to strip magnet wire is mechanical. Use sharp blade, like Exacto knife and work methodicallyfrom 5 mm from the end, to the end of the wire while rotating it. Apply minimum pressure.
