Are factory installed (by Atlas, Bowser, others) Loksound Select decoders such that I can install (with the LokProgrammer) a different sound file, just like with a generic (non-OEM version) Loksound Select? Or are they somehow "locked" to whatever sound the loco manufacturer wanted? I'm interested in moving a factory installed decoder to a different loco, but don't want to permanently make a mess of it by trying to change a sound file that shouldn't or can't be changed. Thanks very much.
You can load any file from the Loksound libray into those decoders. The problem would be in switching back to the OEM files if you wanted to - not all of those are freely available. But if you're not worried about that and just want some new sound file to use it in another loco, it will be fine.

My lokprogrammer is not hooked up at the moment, but could the OP read his decoder and save it as a project,

Thanks to both of you for the advice and suggestions. If I get around to actually doing this, I'll try saving the original as a project.

No, you cannot extract the sounds from the decoder.
