I thought about upgrading a Mantua 4-8-0 with DCC, sound and cab light. I would like to use an ESU LokSound decoder. Question: Since I don´t own the model yet, is there enough space inside the tender for a DCC decoder with speaker? And what would you do: Try to keep the original open frame motor or install a can motor? In case you´d go for a can motor: What can motor type would you use for this engine? I know Mantua once produced replacement can motors for these models (MC-94), but unfortunately I can´t find any online anymore, so I really don´t know which other can motors I could use. But if it´s possible to DCC-ize this model with keeping the original motor, I would chose this option. ESU decoders are very good, so I guess the engine will run very well even with the original motor. Let me know your thoughts!
What do you mean with "elcheepo"? A cheap decoder maybe? Never heard this word before, that´s why I´m asking. And would you keep the original motor or not?

As David said you will need to test the motor and determine how it runs and its stall current. A good decoder will not make a bad motor run better. For a replacement can motor you can try NorthWest Shortline : http://shop.osorail.com/category.sc?categoryId=14

You have an open-frame motor which probably has high run/stall currents that might blow your expensive decoder. I would install Neodynim magnets as replacements for the original alnico. I think the B842 series from K and J Magnetics would fit. They are 1/2"X1/4"X1/8" magnets...I would try the B842-N52 magnets at $.86 per. You would need (about) two stacks of 4 each. K and J also makes these in 1/16" thicknesses that make good "fillers". You can also use Exacto blades as fillers. The Nd magnets should significantly reduce your currents. One other thing..while replacing the magnets take the opportunity to shim the armature to reduce the play to <0.005". Now measure your current draw. It should be "ok" even without "running in". OK would be around .35amps running. Good luck.

I have an old Mantua 4-8-0 "Mastadon", I replaced the motor with one of the aforementioned Mashima replacement can motors and it runs quite well. I haven't converted it to DCC yet however. There isn't much room in the tender - for one thing, it's pretty low compared to more modern tenders. Putting in a decoder shouldn't be a problem, but a speaker might be a problem. Putting a large speaker in a permanently attached trailing car might be an option...or just add a larger tender of course!
