BLi Paragon 2 RF-16 Sharknose - no automatic brake squeal.
Posted by Arras88 on Friday, June 19, 2015 1:33 PM

Hi, I just got the package with two D&H RF-16.

I performed some tests. Everything works except automatic brake squeal.
It worked only once. I could hear the brake squeal when I stopped models first time. Since then I lost lost the automatic brake squeal when coming to a stop. Sound is on but no brake squeal unless I hit F12.

It happened with both models. First run after getting them from the box and first stop - automatic brake squel works. Next run and stop -no brake squeal.

Any ideas? I haven't changed any CV yet (even the address is default).

I don't have any Paragon decodered locos, so just just general suggestions. There are usually at least two CVs involved in the auto brake squeal. One turns it on or off. The other adjusts the onset of whatever is used to trigger the auto squeal. You might check your documentation and then see what values are in those two settings. Then adjust the onset CV.

It may be that you simply haven't done the same thing that triggers the auto squeal since the first time it worked. That would make sense if you haven't made any adjustments.

A short will sometimes randomly affect settings, which could account for any unanticipated changes.

If all else fails, find the CV that resets the decoder to factory values and do that, which should restore auto squeal IF (and only if) it was part of the factory default settings.

I'm a DC user...but on occasion..I will run the six Paragon diesel's I have, with sound and they all will exhibit the brake squeal, but only when I  put the brakes/turn throttle down fast to stop. They are not supposed to squeal in normal braking, same as in Your Auto. Turn Your throttle way up, get to speed and stop fast...Your engine brakes should squeal when trying to stop fast. That is exactly how it is explained in the user's manual for DC running without changing any CV's.

Take Care! Big Smile

Frank, thank you very much for your tip! You're right. It works that way.
If I reduce speed very fast they squeal.

It's quite new for me Surprise
I use DCC so I skipped the part for DC in manual Wink

That's what I suspected also, you simply didn't repeat what caused the auto-squeal to engage in the first place. That's one of the settings I mentioned. You can dial it so that a less sharp reduction in speed will engage the auto-squeal if that better suits your operating style.

EDIT: Also note there also may be two settings to initiate brake squeal. One for DCC and another for DC operation. I'm pretty sure this is the case with Tsunamis, but they do differ in how CVs are arranged, so check the docs you have.
