Tsunami CV question

Greetings all!

Is there a CV that can be programed in a Tsunami that will delay the motor starting until you have already turned up the throttle several notches, in effect causing the diesel to sound as if it is notching up before the locomotive starts to move. Somebody told me there is, I have played with CV 116, and that works to a fashion but it isn't what I think he was talking about or I misunderstood what he was saying, either is possible.

EquipmentL a Digitrax Big Boy with a DB150 booster, a DT 400 throttle (or UT4R) and a pair of new Athearn NYC GP-9s, with factory installed sound.

CV3, Acceleration Rate, should work for this.  CV3 adds a delay to the motor startup.

Giving CV116 a value of 16 turns manual notching "on".Then pressing F9 triggers engine start sequence then each time you press F9 increases one to eight notches.Pressing F10 does the opposite,down a notch each time to engine shut down.

With this setting,all sounds and lights features are active but loco shouldn't move until engine start up sequence is completed.However,using F9 & F10 for engine operation disables manual controlof compressor & fan sounds.You can set them to automatic random sounds with CV112=3.Hope this helps...

You can also use the brakes via F11 or whatever function they are mapped to.   Of course want some delay in acceleration added too.

Paul,

The easiest way to accomplish this programming is to call Soundtraxx - 1-888-789-7637, and ask for technical support.  Trust me on this.  I wished to provide my Athearn GP7 with similar attributes, but trying to read the diesel technical reference and become familiar enough with it to not overlook any CVs is a lot more work.  The folks at Soundtraxx know this stuff better than anyone else.  You'll be glad you called, this feature is a gas, and is another great reason to go with DCC/sound.  Make sure you address the issue of momentum.  I did the same programming on my BLI RSD-15, and it is also big fun to drive.

Wilton's advice is sage.  You pay the big bucks for Soundtraxx and you get good tech support as well.  Give 'em a call, but first prowl through there tech help notes to see if your solution is among their on-line stuff.

When I first worked with the Soundtraxx in my Blackstone models and printed out their steam sound controller instructions, I was floored!  Overtime, and a bit of study, I overcame my fear of CV'ing and the good folks at Soundtraxx helped to smooth the path.

 Just setting CV3 does NOT work with Tsunamis. It does with QSI and Loksound, to great effect.

I believe you need to use manual notching on the throttle. From Tsunami Manual Page 43 - Set CV 116 to 0 . Then the engine RPMs will increase by one notch each time F9 is pressed. F10 will decrease RPMs. Pressing Emergency Stop will reduce the engine speed to idle. Once idling use f10 to shut off.

I use CV3 and CV4 for accel/decel  but engine throttles up as soon as the throttle is advanced.

Hi Paul:

I had the same problem last April.

Diesel Tsunamis can be difficult to set up so you get the throttle response that you desire, i.e. getting the engine to sound and act 'normal' when starting from idle.

Go to this thread and scroll down to the post by 'selector' and study what he (Crandell) has to say. It may seem a bit daunting at first but it does work. Make sure you record your final settings:
