Circuit breakers
Posted by astapleford on Saturday, April 21, 2012 11:34 AM

I have purchased an 8 amp Digitrax Superchief Xtra Duplex Radio system for my 14 X 19 ft, point to point layout. I plan on having 4 districts protected by a 4-way circuit breaker.  I don't have any turning tracks (loops, wyes, etc.) except for a home made turntable at a staging yard at one end.

I am considering a Digitrax PM42 and possibly a DCC Spec PSX4. Are there any other possibilities that I am not thinking about?   Would there be a better approach other than what I have mentioned above? Are there any devices that are mainly circuit breakers and not auto reversers, etc.

Thanks.

The PSX is a great unit but if you just want a breaker then look at the OG-CB from the same company. Digitrax PM42 is a breaker also. NCE has the EB1 which is a single block breaker. CVP has its Zone share and Zone master breakers too.

My layout is roughly the same size as yours, except I have the 5-amp Super Chief, and I use a PM42 without any issues.

The layout is divided into five power districts, and three of the five are directly powered off three of the PM42's outputs.

The other two power districts are actually two reversing sections, each fed by an AR1.  Both the AR1's in turn are fed off the fourth PM42 output.

Contrary to popular myth, the relays used in the PM42 and the AR1's are NOT a problem with sound locos.  I get no sound drop-outs whatsoever when the AR1's reverse, and I have no startup or short recovery issues with the PM42.  It Always Just Works.

Thanks for all the advice guys! I have decided on 2 PSX-2's. One will be within easy reach of districts 1 and 2, and the second PSX-2 will be within easy reach of districts 3 and 4 (narrow gauge branch). I like the use of screw terminals for wiring.

Thanks again.
