Working Rooftop beacons
Posted by Hergy on Saturday, September 25, 2010 1:45 PM

Since DCC has given us all these wonderful lighting options I'm looking for ideas to fabricate (or purchase) Cullen type flasher beacons. I'm aware that Details West and Detail Assoc. dummy beacons exist and am thinking that perhaps there would be some way to modify these items. I model UP and like the look of the 70's locos equipped with the flashers.

If I could find an appropriately sized bulb or LED I think that the above mentioned parts would be adaptable. Anybody have any experience with fabricating working flashers?

For this model I used a Details West beacon, The beacon is lit in the picture, camera makes it kind of had to see.  The beacons lens was already cored out, so I was able to just slide a clear Grain-o-wheat bulb inside, Since the bulbs are so tiny, the lenses on the vary in shape/size a little, so I had to try a few before I found one that fit in perfectly.

If I recall, I accidentally broke the original lens in the detail kit. I ended up taking a piece of the sprue the lens was attached to (which is made of the same material and about the same size) and drilled out the center to fit a bulb. So if your details lens is not cored, you can always carefully drill it out and fit the bulb.
