Hello Rene,

I've never seen a drawing for the UP 4-8-2s in two-tone gray. An article by Lou Schmitz enitled "Two-Tone Gray" in vol. 4 no. 1 of the UP society's magazine, the "Streamliner," includes a drawing for painting two-tone-gray passenger engines but uses a 4-8-4 as the example. But data on the drawing specifies that it applies to the 4-8-2s and 4-6-6-4s as well, and there are many photos of the 4-8-2s in this paint scheme.

The article includes paint specification numbers but not color samples, and I've never seen color samples for this paint scheme.

Since the engines were painted to match passenger cars, I'd guess that Scalecoat's NYC light and dark grays would at least be close. The UP's passenger cars were painted to match Pullman pool-service cars that were painted to match the NYC's original two-tone gray cars, with a light gray body and a dark gray window stripe. There were slight variations in these gray colors, but they were all pretty close.

Good luck with your paint job, and thanks for signing your name.

So long,

Andy
