I have a Bachmann HO GE 45 Ton locomotive that I was wanting to install a horn on. The locomotive comes without a horn so I started researching as many photo websites as I could find to look at what different kinds of horns the prototypes used and saw a lot photos of 45 ton locomotives where I didn't see any horn at all.
This brings me to my question, did some of these locomotives have their horns "under the hood" like an automobile? Wasn't a horn of some type required on all locomotives even on a private shortline? Or was a bell enough?
Thanks,
Ralph
You can go here:

And scroll to page three where there is a cutaway view and the horn can be seen to the left of the cab. This is a 44 tonner.

Page four has a sketch showing the location of the bell as well.
This example uses a small air whistle mounted high on the cab wall:

Only male 45-tonners had horns

Thanks Ed, those photos help! I have a Webco type E single chime that I'm going to use. I'll put it on the cab roof since it's plastic and the hood is metal, but the Webco looks a lot like the one on the hood of the 44 tonner. Most of the photos I looked at I couldn't see a horn at all but I wasn't looking for anything like the one on "the France Stone", makes since now.
Thanks again,
