What color was the Cannonball Express? (New Orleans Special)
Posted by trfindley on Tuesday, July 5, 2011 12:04 PM

Lately I have become interested in the AHM 4-6-0 and Casey Jones. I have looked around the Internet, and bought a book about the IC to find out which cars and color were used on the train. I could only find 2 pictures. One was from 1898, with 2 passenger cars being pulled by a 2-6-0. The cars may be green. Another pic shows a light-colored car made of wood at the 1948 Chicago Railroad Fair.

The 1898 pic shows cars like the Tyco 1890 passenger cars.

Does anyone have more info than this?

I think the reason I never got a Casey Jones 4-6-0 in the 70's was because there were no old-time passenger cars or cabooses lettered for IC.

I coud be wrong. It happened once beforebut I don't think there was a real train called the cannonball express.  Casey Jones was an Illinois Central engineer so an cars would have been IC cars.  Perhapss the IC hiistorical society could help with the color..

I took your advice, and here it is:

They also had some old black and white photos, and the cars looked green rather than a light color.
