Aerial view versus ground view
Posted by tomikawaTT on Wednesday, September 1, 2010 5:32 PM

Since a look at Mapquest had revealed an interesting prototype industrial facility close to a destination I had to visit, I deviated from my direct course to check it out   The aerial view showed a balloon loop around what appeared to be an intermodal facility, with a concrete mix plant on one side.

From the street, the view is one of an opaque fence along the property line.  The only gap, where the rails enter the facility, is a locked and guarded gate.  Very little can be seen beyond it.

So I continued past the end of the property, drove a little farther, then made a 180 and returned the same way I had come.  The northeast perimeter fence is simple chain link - but the view was blocked by a LONG cut of covered hoppers on the outer track of the double track loop.

If you want a look at the place, enter E. Craig Road and Donovan Way, North Las Vegas, NV, in your map program of choice.  Pan northeast between Donovan Way and I-15.  An aerial view will give you far more information than I got from the ground.

I have used bothg methods in a quest to solve the riddle of  a  major line relocation on the Ojai Branch, although the branch is long gone, the relocation did serve a sewage treatment plant in later years, that fact is well documented, but the plot thickens, although not visible on the ground today, aerial views taken after WWII show the outline of a massive complex of foundation remains on the same plot, also visible is faint  roadbed evidence of mutliple spurs that once served it, I have yet to determine what was there or the year the relocation occured
