N scale Bachman ATSF full length dome coach
Posted by jguess733 on Monday, August 24, 2009 3:10 PM

Since I couldn't get any replies in the General Discussion I'll re-post here to see if I can get any help.

The only full dome coach's I can find are from Bachman, and while they look ok enough, there are a couple of things that really turn me off. I'll start with a couple of pics.

First off, the letter board is way too big. Any advice on shrinking it and still maintaining the corrugated siding?

Secondly, the couplers. Are the stock couplers talgos? Or are they body mounts? Any tips on which MT couplers to use?

What color tint did the Santa Fe use on their cars, and how should I go about replicating that?

Thanks.

First off the Bachmann full dome is except for the big letterboard correct for the Santa Fe dome lounge cars. These cars were lounge cars not coaches.I have the HO version and I used a scribe tool and straight edge to line up the corrigations then scribed them to reduce the letterboard. It's time consuming but will work.

The couplers are in both HO & N talgo mounted. On the HO version I have I body mounted some Kadee 46 couplers and set them in from the end so the cars would have correct knuckle location. Using Kadee 46 couplers gave the couplers some swing to allow them to go around somewhat sharper curves.

Santa Fe streamlined pasaenger equipment was for the most part 18/8 stainless steel. Not sure how to go about painting it.
