CB&Q F-3 color(s)
Posted by teakettle on Wednesday, October 22, 2008 11:15 AM

Can anyone tell me what color CB&Q F-3 freight units were painted?  Were the passenger units different than the freight units?  Perhaps there is a prototype site that I could check, but I don't know much about searching for this kind of thing.  Any help or suggestions would be appreciated.

Check http://www.burlingtonroute.com/

I believe the freight units were a very light gray; the passenger units silver (or stainless).

I've heard the freight units referred to as "graybacks." See http://www.burlingtonroute.com/gallery/displayimage.php?album=1&pos=17

The CB&Q 'freight' F's were painted in a 'bone white' color, and it faded rather fast.  Here is a link to a good picture:

The passenger F3's(there were only 3 ABA sets) had stainless steel side panels and aluminum nose/roof area's(same as the E units).

Maybe 20 years ago somebody (perhaps Stewart?) came out with Burlington F units painted a shade of gray that exactly matched a CB&Q paint chip / sample of the paint used. Everyone complained because indoors under artificial light the gray looked way to dark, even though it was exactly the right color. Generally white or a very light gray paint will work better.

The ones I remember coming through Amarillo TX on the old FW&D line were a very light gray--from the distance, they looked white.  Very handsome.
