Bombardier bi-level commuter trains
Posted by nof on Saturday, March 1, 2008 4:12 AM

Hello all!

I'm considering to order some of Athearns new  Bombardier bi-level commuter cars and want to know a little more before I do.

What is the difference between the 'Cab Control Coach' and the ordinary 'Coach'?

What locos are correct to use to pull them?

A cab-control coach has an operators cab at one end.  This car would be at the opposite end of the train from the locomotive and the cab enables the train to run "backwards" with the cab-control coach leading and the locomotive pushing.  In practice, this eliminates the need to turn the entire train around at the end of a run. A "coach" does not have the cab and makes up the rest of the train.

Athearn makes the F59PHI locomotive in paint schemes to match the Bombardier cars.  In actual service, these cars have been or are also pulled by EMD GP40TC's, F40PH's and F59PH's as well as MPI's MP36.  I suggest you go to www.railpictures.net and check out appropriate photos.

Thank you for your information. I have looked at railpictures as you suggested and I will continue looking.
