"The War" documentary on PBS
Posted by FloridaPanhandler on Tuesday, September 25, 2007 11:59 AM
Just wanted to give everyone a heads up that there is a new Ken Burns documentary on PBS this week called "The War".  It's about World War II, but spends a lot of time exploring the war experience on the homefront in four towns in Alabama, California, Minnesota, and Connecticut.  Besides being a great documentary (Burns is best known for his masterpiece on the Civil War), it also offers some great tidbits for modelers.  There are lots of high quality photographs and some film of small town USA scenes in the 1940s.  Even a few scenes with trains in them.  So if you're modeling this era, you may find some great ideas for buildings, cars, streetscapes, etc. by watching this film.

I've seen a little of it, it looks interesting. The local (St.Paul) paper carried an article on the editor of the Luverne MN paper that Burns quotes from in the documentary, he compared his writing to Mark Twain's.

I missed the first episode because I was watching "The Hillbillies" on the History Channel - which had a nice segment on the building of the Clinchfield RR, showing historical pics/footage and current day CSX trains. Smile [:)]
