Tim,

It sounds to me you don't want to buy a MRC power pack. I don't understand this because I have been very happy with mine. I wish you luck. If you do find a successful formula for this, and can come up with a walk-around option, I would like very much to hear what you learned.

Have you had any success contacting a builder, such as Life Like, and getting intelligent answers to technical questions?

There is no answer to this question because not all locos use the same types of motors. PWM is better for operation, but will fry some motors, esp. n scale ones, and makes a buzzing sound which some railroaders find annoying. Most PWM in the usa use 60 cycles because it's what comes out of the wall. If you altered the frequency you will change the buzzing sound frequency also. It sounds like a science fair project to me.

I'm in the planning stages of my first HO layout in about thirty years. I'm planning to design my own throttles and all logic for the layout. NO DCC!

Which works best for the small DC motors in the locos, straight filtered Direct Current or Pulsed (PWM).
If PWM, what frequency?
