My first pictures (updated with trackplan picture)

Yea this is my first real layout. I did a small experiment many years ago (long before DCC) with Swedi***rains (I'm from Sweden) but they suck sooo bad! Excuse my language but it's true. I then discovered USA made trains like Atlas and Kato and that made me very excited. So here I am again [:D]

Looks great! [^] The benchwork is probably the most unappreciated yet one of the most important parts of your layout. If your benchwork is good and solid, your layout "has the potential" to run flawlessly. Without a good solid base to put your layout on, your layout will most likely be laden with "frustration upon frustration". Wiring and track work can be corrected most of the time with minimal disruption or destruction. It your benchwork is bad, everything has to come up. Great work, electrolove! Keep it up and keep us posted...

May I ask why you have an angle at the right corner...where you will be standing?

You are absolutely right about that. I really wanted to make a good job with the benchwork. As someone else said in this forum. You will have so expensive things on the benchwork so you must make it good. I agree 100%

Thanks. Yes it's very sturdy. I can probably walk on it, but the foam will not hold me, hehe.

Thanks. Yes it's based on the Rio Grande. I like that kind of scenery very much.

Regarding your question. The trackplan is from an old number (around 1987) of Model Railroader and I liked it so much so I just scanned it and rescaled it in Photoshop to fit my room. I just copyed the angels from the trackplan without thinking to much about it. I think it will be much more interesting to look at a fascia with angles so I'm glad I didn't cheat. [:D]

It's the november 1987 issue. The Iron Wood RR by Larry R. Forgard (page 74). I like this trackplan a lot because it has a little of everything. I will model a D&RGW version of it.

This nice bench work,But I do'nt think I would ever try and connect foam directly to the frame work,I think I would put some lite playwwood on frame first.It would be my luck to lean on or drop something on the top and brake the foam.My two cents worth.

Maybe you are right about the lack of ply, but It has not been a problem so far. I glued the foam with latex caulk. And after that was dry (about 24 hours) I glued the foam under the benchwork as well, on every spot where foam meets wood. I have foam on all 3 sections now. The benchwork is glued as well just to be sure. It can be separated into 3 sections, I just used some big bolts (10 mm).



To adjust the height of each leg I used these things. I don't know what they are called in english but it will be pretty self explaining I think.

Some of those little rubber foot pads that go under chair legs might help with saving the floor from indentations and other damage over time.

You are right to use those screws on the bottoms of the legs though. They make leveling the layout a snap don't they?

Maybe I will use rubber pads, that's a good idea. Yes It's so easy to level the layout. And it's importent when I have 3 sections. I leveled the first section, then the second and third. After that I drilled the holes for the big bolt so they can't move at all. As easy as that.
