PECO N scale C55 Double Crossover
Posted by rgengineoiler on Wednesday, December 12, 2012 8:23 AM

I have too install one of these on my new layout I'm building.  It came with wiring instructions etc. but I am confused with either insulators or just metal rail joiners and solder.  The instructions say plastic or metal your choice.   Appreciate some know how on this one.   Doug

Hi Doug,

By Double Crossover you mean double-slip (Diamond with point blades). I put 2 in, you need insulated fish-plates all round to make it a stand alone unit as per paperwork.  Then it says to use micro switches on the pointmotors, nuts, they are murder to set-up.  So I used 4 way rotary switches on the code55 to set up the correct feed polarity for the frogs, worked ok.(see below)

That was way back in me pre-dcc days, should be ok  because I did the same way in HO code 75 on our new layout but used standard 2 to 1 pointmotor switches (PL13 I think, me brain ain't working at the mo) instead of the rotaries for frog feed and stud and bullet ( Electric Pen) for blade control and they work great.

Be in touch.

Hi Pick.  By Double Crossover I mean PECO SL-383F.  Also what is your meaning, "fish plates" on the crossover turnout.   Doug

No, a double crossover is different than a double slip.

I have the double cross over and actually did not have to do any special wiring at all.  I drilled holes for the wires to hang down, but that's all they do, just hang there.  I did not insulate anything, and all my locos go through just fine.  I run Digitrax DCC, and this double crossover is near the edge of the layout, so all 4 turnouts are thrown manually.

Thanks Scott.  That is how I have mine installed now.  I drilled for the four wires and let them hang down and I installed metal rail joiners but have not soldered until I know everything is running.  I also plan to throw the turnouts manually for now.  I am not ready to power it up yet.  To much to do.     Doug

Hi Doug,

Sorry friend, that's what happens using different handles in different countries, the PECO SL-383F (scissors) is a bit after my N gauge days as well.
