Barn Red Paint
Posted by cowman on Saturday, April 28, 2007 10:02 PM

Does anyone have a formula for barn red paint?  Local Hwdre smallest quantity 1 gal, enough for full scale buildings.  Think I prefer latex or acryllic, but will try most anything once.

Thanks,

I bought a small bottle of acrylic for a quarter at A.C. Moore craft supplies.  Check Michaels or even Wal-Mart in the craft department. Nice real-world looking color, by the way.

Check the acrylic craft paints in a hobby or craft store.  There is no one "barn red".  Pick the color that meets your needs.

An alternative is to pick a boxcar red (zinc chromate primer? Pollyscale Light Freight Car Red?) and use that.

wow, bumping an 8-year old thread, but searching here and elsewhere online for "barn red" colors, I discovered Encycolorpedia.com, which lists name brands, color matches, color analyses, and lots more that I don't understand.  Smile

Here is the page for example for Vallejo's "carmine red," which a number of different sources identified as one possible contender for a nice "barn red": http://encycolorpedia.com/990033

The hexadecimal color code #990033 / #903 is a medium dark shade of pink. In the RGB color model #990033 is comprised of 60% red, 0% green and 20% blue. In the HSL color space #990033 has a hue of 340 degrees, 100% saturation and 30% lightness. This color has an approximate wavelength of 406 nm. Humbrol 20 Crimson, New Citadel Khorne Red, Old Citadel Scab Red, Vallejo Game Color Scarlett Red (012), Vallejo Model Color Carmine Red (908), Rackham Arcavia Red (35) and Reaper Master Deep Red (9002) are matching paint colors.

Absolutely fascinating site.

that's another great site, I've run across that in the past. My problem is that I am red-green deficient/color blind, so I have to take on faith what other people say they see.  Smile  I need all the help I can get!!

Hi,

Over the years I've made my own many times.  Get a bottle of Testors or Modelcraft FLAT Red, and a bottle of Flat brown or Rust.  Add the brown/rust to the red to taste.   Note that there was no specific "barn red" or "box car red", as there was/is many different variations.  As I understand, the pigment for the "red" was really cheap, looked good and wore well, so it was used on many different cars and structures.

ENJOY  !
