You didn't mention what kind of system you are using for your layout, DC or DCC. Also, you don't say what you the block detection to do. There are a number of block detection systems on the market for both DC and DCC. I have the most experience with Digitrax DCC since that's what I use but all work in basically the same way. They detect current drawn by a loco in the detection block. The difference between the various manufacturers is what they do with that information. In DC systems they typically provide a signal that says a block is occupied and you have to wire something to do what you want based on that information. Throw a turnout, stop a train or whatever. DCC gives you the ability to do that and more. You could throw a turnout for an approaching train, stop it, set a signal, light an indicator or just about anything else you want.
