Truck Replacement for AHM wrecking crane
Posted by rrlcommish on Friday, December 1, 2006 8:56 PM
I am taking advice from my previous post and replacing the trucks on my old AHM rolling stock (along with the couplers).  I have one that is a problem...a wrecking crane that has three-axle trucks rather than the standard two.  I looked in the Walthers catalog, and there are some three-axle trucks, but they appear to be for passenger car applications.  Anyone have a suggestion for the proper truck for this?

You may end up doing as I have with a similar piece of MOW equipment. I simply replaced the couplers only (which was easy) and left the trucks as is. I also replaced those ungodly pizza cutters.

I replaced the wheelsets with Intermountain metal wheels on my Bachman and Athearn 200 ton cranes.  I cut off the talgo couplers and body mounted Kadee #5 knuckle couplers. The Athearn crane was set up as being steam powered, so I removed the smoke stack & installed a diesel stack & air intake louvers.  BTW, the Intermountain axles fit the trucks tight enough that the wheels would stay in the journals but still roll freely.  I think the AHM trucks are about the same width because I have a bunch of old AHM cars with the Intermountain wheelsets.  Tweet.

Walthers makes a friction bearing 6 wheel buckeye truck but only on their hot metal car. They no longer list this car. Try E-bay or train shows.
