I believe the garden scale modelers use these often.  Perhaps you could post this in that forum and get some good answeres.

We use wireless control when we run DC at the modules. They dont seem to sell the one we have anymore, its an older model. But they offer this more basic one with only one channel.

The one we use has a 10 channel remote and we have 3 recievers, one for each mainline. This is basically the same thing. It is a little pricey and takes some getting used to the delay when you are running, but it is wireless and reliable with a nice long range.

My modular RR club used a wireless DC controller.  I do not remember the brand name.  You needed a controller (throttle) and reciever station for each throttle.  We purchased two of them at a discount, however they were still over $100 each.  If you are going to get into that type of money I would suggest going to DCC.

Aristo Craft (Polk's Hobby in New Jersey) makes the Train Engineer line of wireless DC throttles for all scales:  http://www.aristocraft.com/. I have used their model 55470 for several years.  It was primarily designed for garden railroads but works fine with HO.

It is somewhat pricey and requires a separate DC power supply (Aristo makes them, or you can use your existing power pack).  Several of the discount Internet sites sell various versions of the Train Engineer.

Try contacting the Northern Virginia NTRAK club.  They were using the Aristo Craft Train Engineer units to operate their NTRAK modules.  You could contact Jim FitzGerald the President of NTRAK for the name of the point of contact with the Northern Virginia club.  Jim can be contacted at 805-434-5058 in Templeton, CA or at ntrak@tcsn.net.

Hope this helps,

Bob

I believe there was an article on a DIY wireless throttle in an old issue of MRR.  You may be able to search the archives to find it if you are inclined to build one yourself.  I think the components were pretty cheap.  Tweet
