Bridge Abutments on MR's MR&T layout
Posted by gd891 on Monday, July 31, 2006 7:39 AM

In the September 06 issue of MR, on page 67 there is a shot of the MR&T layout.  It appears to be a Central Valley thru-truss bridge and some sort of plate bridge.  The abutment where the two types of bridges join has different levels since the plate bridge footings will always sit much lower.

Does anyone know of a commercial kit for this abutment?

I need to match up a truss bridge with two plate bridges on either side.

Thanks.

Hi Greg,

That stepped pier on the MR&T (and it's a pier, not an abutment, since it's between two spans) was simply cut from a length of 1 x 4 and painted and weathered as you see in the photo. Offhand I don't know of any ready-made stepped bridge piers. They would be very handy, but you'd need them in a variety of sizes to match the variety of bridges.

So long,

Andy
