woodland scenics

hi,
i am building a new ho layout. right now I have just built a 4x8 table. Does anyone have any input on the woodland scenic grand valley layout kit

I read someone else was just starting this WS package a few days ago, sounds like you will be working in tandom.

I have no first hand knowledge of this specific item, but any WS item I have used I have been very happy with ,(except their water products) the buildings are actually produced by DPM and I also have no complaints with their products for what they are. It seems like you have taken a good solid step forward, I often wished last year when I started that I had taken this route with my first 'grown up" layout.

It looks like a good product, reasonably priced with many learning experiences built in and the ability to change the plan if you wish.....
The products in the kit are =

WS scenery and accessories
DPM structures
Atlas track (sold separately)

Three major players in the game, I really dont see how you can go wrong.

EDIT : this is the link to the past thread about the Grand Valley Layout, maybe you can contact this guy through e:mail and discuss points through the building process together, cant get much better than that, two guys building their own railroad and they are both doing it at the same time, from the exact same basis ,, the things you two can get from eachother.... tips , hints, do's, donts, inspiration and a little competition

The DIY network had (has?) a series called "Working On The Railroad" about building either this particular kit or its sibling. I If you have that channel, you might check out, or see what info the DIY website has.

I reflect the ukguy. Everything from WS I have tried is wonderful. I even had good luck with one of the water products. My impression is that the kits are a little more expensive, but for a first timer it may accually save money in that it will help you avoid buying a bunch of stuff you will not need.

I watched part of the Workin on the Railroad bit, and it was helpful. The biggest thing you will need is a nice mixture of courage and creative daring. Just remember, this will be the best layout you ever built, but probably not the best you will ever build. I built my first one more than 60 years ago, but the one I am working on now is better, I think. Do enjoy yourself and share pics of progress.

If you have not discovered them, WS puts out videos and books on the process . Both are helpful, whether you use the kit, the products or the ideas.

Like arthill I also thought it was pricey. I have been starting but never finishing layouts for the past 40 yrs. Something always got in the way eg moving,etc. Now I am determined to do it right. I have spent lots of bucks in all those years only to give it away when circumstances changed. This seems like a good way to go. Thanks for all your support

UKguy-i am not from the UK but I have been an avid watcher of BBC TV for many years. I guess it's rubbing off. Not such a bad thing! I will keep all you guys posted on my progress. Thanks all!
