Forget the plastic joiners!!! Lay all the track and cut gaps where you need them with a dremel. Much easier, better looking and cheaper. Perhaps a look at some basic wiring books would be in order here.... As far as switches go, just use good basic switch wiring techniques and you will be fine. Are you using power routing switches??? Live or dead frogs??? Wire each accordingly.
