As far as infrared LEDs are concerned: I know that they are used with night vision cameras, but those are usually only black & white (I have some in my backyard). I don't think that the image from a color camera would be that great if you use infrared LEDs, since infrared has a totally different light spectrum then normal daylight. This might only work in black & white. But it might be worth a try.
