Ballasting Tip
Posted by nbrodar on Friday, October 21, 2005 8:37 AM
I admit I lifted this tip from Iain Rice.

Here's an easy way to get the ballast off the rail and ties. After you get the ballast formed the way you want with a soft brush, take the brush handle an tap it across the railheads. The vibration knocks any stray ballast grains off the rail and ties.

At first I thought it was too simple to work, but it works like a dream.

Thanks, Nick. I would be the type to tap too hard 'cuz I'm in a hurry, and then I'd have to go and check my gauge!

Hey, Nick. You're right. I forgot about that. I guess I just do it without thinking. It does tend to settle the ballast down where it needs to be.
