Getting Started With My LGB Train Layout

I am new to railroading,and I need help laying out a track layout.I just purchased a New York Central Starter set from LGB,and all it comes with is an round track.I would like to make my layout about 16 feet long,and maybe a few curves, anyone have any ideas especially how many more track I would need.Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

First of all, welcome to the forum! [:)]

I'm into HO so I can't really give you much help on LBG (also know as G-gauge). What would be good for you to do, Dan, is to find a good local hobby shop (LHS) in your area (if there is one) that sells LGB and talk with them. Did you buy your layout online or at a hobby shop?

I know in HO that six 18" radius curves and/or eight 22" radius curves make up a half circle. I don't know for sure how G-gauge figures their curved track. You could also do a search on the Web for G-gauge layouts to help give you some ideas.

Go over to the Garden Railways magazine forum. That's where we G-scalers hang out more than here -- I haunt both areas because I have both G and HO, but most G-scalers don't do both.

I use all Aristo-Craft track instead of LGB because of the cost factor. Aristo-Craft straight track comes in lengths from 1 to 5 feet. I have no idea how long a straight pieces of LGB track is.

Aristo-Craft will not marry up to LGB without using rail clamps, so you need to carefully consider whether you want to go with the additional expense of having to use rail clamps at every location where you intermix the two brands.

You also need to be aware that G-scale track comes in different "codes" or rail sizes, too, so whatever you purchase needs to be the same size rail as what you presently have.

Again, I don't know about LGB, but Aristo-Craft has either brass or stainless steel rail, in curve diameters from 4 to 20 foot, in both European and USA styles. I think LGB comes only in European style.

One box of LGB 4' straight sections will give you the 16'. Split your circle in half, spred them apart, and put 3 sections to each side. The LHS price for a box of six pieces is about $90.00. They have siding expansion kits that are about $100 a pop. Two tunouts, a couple of curves, and some straight track.
