John I built my layout at 50" due to an auto being parked in the trainroom. I built my 3 year old a 2'x2' platform from 4x4 posts (legs) 3/4 plywood as the platform and 2x4's as the rail. He can climb up and down and can see all the action. Its also sturdy enough for me to stand on. At 50" I have had to cut in some access holes to reach crital areas.
