Cheap Electrical Switches
Posted by Benjamin Maggi on Tuesday, March 22, 2005 7:11 PM
Looking for an online source for cheap SPST, DPDT, and other such toggle switches that would be used for routing block power, lights, and such. I figure 5 AMPS at 12 volts should be a high enough rating. Anyways, who knows of an online vendor that will sell a couple at a decent price... not the prices Rad** Sh*** charges! Thanks. Ben

I and members of my operating group have been buying switches and other electronic supplies from DeMar Electronics for several years. Great prices and service. Web site is www.demarelectronics.com

Snoopyto,

How do you stand demar electronics web site with all its' flashing menus? While their prices on the items I could find before my eyes went haywire seemed good, there's no additional information available on an item. Additionally, they have a connector for the Tortoise switch machine that needs modification at the same price as the one from Parkade Hobbies that does not. Am I missing something?

Bob Hayes,

Yeah, I believe you are missing something.

Are you sure you looked at the website I gave the link for? Nothing you said is correct. No flashing menu's; plenty of information; connectors for Tortise are actually 75 cents less that the shop you mentioned.

Suggest you take another look.

I went to the DeMar site earlier today with the old Windows 2000 machine at work, and there was some pop-up activity that is blocked by IE with the latest XP Service pack on my machine at home. Actually, I thought their site was one of the best for finding stuff, with a category list on the left. They had small panel meters, which I was looking for and didn't find anywhere else.

snoopytoo,

I clicked on your link and got to a web site that says Demar Electronics scrolling across the top with a flashing list of catagories on the left. When I clicked on connectors, I got a flashing page with a list of connectors and down at the bottom in white lettering it says "connector for tortoise switch machine" which I clicked on.It says "The following part is from AMP Corp and is the standard connector for this item. We are now researching to find another that will fit without any modification." It goes on "50-20A-30______$2.25" Since you are the expert on Demar Electronics, just what modifications do they make to the AMP connectors, since there is no picture on their web site, AMP doesn't seem to make an 8/16 edge card connector, and the part number on Demars site is not an AMP part number?

I hadn't been to Parkade Hobbies web site since I last purchased their connectors. I see they have jacked up their prices considerably and found a new supplier as the ones I got from them a month or two ago were $22.50 for ten and didn't have their name on them. Guess I should have gotten more.

If you run Firefox Demar Electronics site is useless the menus flash and navigating is impossible. However if you give John a call he's pretty good about sending catalogs.

Looks like we're all correct concerning the ease of use, flashing list's, etc, at Demar site. Just depends on software.

I did not and do not claim to be an expert on Demar. Just wanted to pass on some economical info!

I don't use any connector on my Tortise machines. In my opinion it's a waste of money! The machines already cost and arm and a leg so why spend more to save a few minutes to change out a failed machine.

Although I've only been using Tortise machines for three years, I have not had any failures. Even if they did fail, the cost replacing a machine wired with a connector ($2 +-) versus the time involved in changing out 5 to 8 wires would not be justified even though time wise it would probably take only a few seconds. I'd estimate it would take me less than two minutes to remove the feed wire's from the old terminal strip and put them on a new terminal strip. By the way, all of my Tortise machines are prewired with a 2'-3' harness and solder terminal strip. And yes, it did take a while to prewire the machines but I held a wiring "party" and six or seven members of my operating group sat around a table and did the first batch of 75 in 2-3 hours.

I'm using Mozilla for my browser, so that explains the flashing problem.
