Well, Marklin decided to "upgrade" their track system to be more in line with the requirements of their proprietary digital command control system (based on a Motorola protocol) over 30 years ago, when they replaced the old tin-plate track with their current C-Gleis track system. Apparently, they had no faith in their old system to be a stable medium to carry the digital signal.

I know of people who converted their M track (sounds like Amtrak) layouts to Marklin´s digital control system and are happy with it.

M track is old, made of tin-plate, is for 3-rail AC alone and prone to rust. Unless you want to build a Marklin nostalgic layout, like they did in the 1960s, you´d better stay away from it!
