G'day gents!
I'm researching industries for the club's new layout. One that I am considering is Walthers Mountain Lumber Company sawmill. Unfortunately the kit as shown in the catalogue is a bit too big for the space we have available, and it is 'backwards' in terms of how it would best fit on the layout. I'm quite willing to take a chainsaw to the kit but before I do that I'm wondering if anybody has kitbashed this kit, maybe to make it smaller or to re-arrange things like where the logs are fed into the mill? Please share your ideas.

Thanks,

I'm just a dude with a bad back having a lot of fun with model trains, and finally building a layout!
You may have noticed the button to download the instruction sheet on the lower right side of the webpage. That's a good source of "what-if" information, combined with the footprint info right below it.
Most of Walthers' structure kits have the instructions available, which makes it much easier to determine if the kit is a candidate for the project you have in mind.

Hi Eric:
Yes, I am aware of the instruction sheets and the footprint diagrams. In fact I have the footprints for about 15 different possible buildings on my desk as we speak.
Thanks
Eric,
If my attached picture works you will see that I put the log conveyor entrance on the oppositeside, the sawn lumber outlet roof on the opposite side and shortened it to fit my log pond area. Note that I put a sign accross the cut joint in the log entrance wall to hide the groove and the vertical boards that didn't match.
I'll try to learn how to post the picture.

Hi Gorton:
Unfortunately your picture doesn't show. Maybe have a look at Steven Otte's thread on how to post photographs which is at the top of the General Discussions thread list. I am eager to see it.

Unfortunately the image is still not showing. I'm getting the same "404 Error" message as before.
Please keep trying. I really want to see what you have done.

FWIW, I use Imgur as well and it is really easy.

Thanks Gorton,
Your model is very nicely done! I like the subtle weathering on the roof. IMHO too many roofs are modelled with excess weathering. The roller system for loading the flat cars is neat too.

Just for everyone's information, the Barrie club has decided to not model a large lumbermill operation. Instead, we are going to model a very simple pulp forestry scene with a couple of tracks and a small office, a couple of piles of pulp logs, and a couple of log handlers to load the flat cars. The majority of the scene will be logging roads on 'mountains', probably better described as 'hills'.
The pulp logging operation will feed the Hearst pulp mill at another location on the layout. The Hearst scene will be a major part of the layout.
Cheers!!
