Coal Rotary Dumper - N&W Lamberts Poiny Yard
Posted by starman on Monday, July 7, 2014 9:19 AM
As part of my new layout (HO) I am modeling the N&W Lamberts Point yard in Norfolk, VA.  Does anyone know of any videos that show the operation of the coal rotary dumper in operation or any material related to the operation of the Lamberts Point yard?  Thanks.

A simple You-tube search for Lamberts Point coal dumper shows several results:

A discussion of the various piers and a number of photos are found in Chapter 8 of Norfolk & Western Railway: Pocahontas Coal Carrier by Richard E. Prince (1980).

If you are modeling the N&W and not the Norfolk and Southern, You need probably some documentations of the two old pier which you can easily find on the historical website of the N&W, www.nwhs.com

You will find picture of the old high lift coal dumper and the famous elevator of the other pier.

Plan of the dumper are aviaible.

Check out the MR insider video on the National train show, it features a HO scale fully functioning coal rotary dump.

NS has a second video about Pier 6, which was opened in 1962.

As for the rotary dumper, I'm not sure if that is original equipment or not.  But, given that N&W and Southern Rwy didnt merge until 1982 (1997, interesting wikipedia note), Pier 6 works for you depending on your time period.
