Trestle bents
Posted by wickman on Monday, March 24, 2014 11:29 PM

Hi guys , I've started on the new layout and I would like to incorporate a curved trestle in the layout and I would like to build this from scratch. I would like to do a 6 leg bent design. Would anyone have specific measurement s or a template in PDF form?

Appreciate any help  can get

Thanks

Lynn,

How about something to whet your appetite. There are some diagrams, if you can read them. You can blow them up some. There was a poster awhile back, that wanted to build his own and I convinced Him to pick up a Campbells bridge to his liking and custom build it to what he wanted. This way, he would have most of the scale lumber needed already!

Have Fun!

Thanks Frank for  the  suggestions. The campbell kits  are nice but they don't do justice to   want I want to do which is have the bents 18-20 inches  deep to the gorge floor and a very long span across.

Lynn,

Check out the Black Bear Construction web site:  http://www.blackbearcc.com/index.shtml

Look at their Download Catalog - Lots of good info and diagrams of a 6 leg trestle bent.

They also sell 'jigs' for cutting the lumber and have a PDF of the jig:  http://www.blackbearcc.com/pdf/use%20the%20cutting%20guide.pdf

There is lots of good information in this web site!

Wickman,

I believe you may have missed my point, when I suggested the Campbell trestle kits. They come with full size plans and templates, to build the bridge, curved, straight, height and length, to what ever you desire. You don't have to build it the way it is shown. Thereby scratch building what you want with the plans supplied, the scale lumber used etc. And to purchase more scale lumber, the other sites. Also if you don't have one already, a Scale Ruler.

Have Fun!

Frank of course I have A scale ruler, I even have a track gauge lol.

guess I did miss your point but then again I should be able to use the plans in the kit for additional bridges as well.

I built one of the JV trestles on a curve with a grade.  You get two pages of templates with some vague instructions and a lot of wood strips to build with.  Exactly what I was looking for- essentially scratch-built but without having to find or make templates and source up the wood.  I had a ton of left over wood and using it to build all sorts of other things for the layout.
