Will I create a problem if I set the turntable on top of the plywood and carve a cavity out of the underside of the foam so the turntable is sandwiched between them?
In order to be able to remove the turntable pit assembly I could cut a square hole in the plywood (the shape of the pit assembly) at a different alingment to the cavity in the foam... if that makes sense, I think I'll be able to raise the pit assembly into place and rotate it to 'lock it in' to the foam cavity...Thoughts?
As long as you can remove the bridge from the pit, I see no reason to remove the pit. All you need is a hole through the plywood for the drive shaft (about two inches or so). I have a Heljan turntable mounted in 2" foam. The bridge is removable but the pit is held in by the approch rails.
In your case you have a square base. My approch would be to mount it from from the bottom.
I don't know the measurements so I don't know how much foam you need to remove. When doing your measuring, don't forget that you want the bottom of the rail on the top edge of the pit, so figure in the height of the roadbed (if applicable) and the tie height. You can shim the pit with wood blocks and styrene to get the proper hight.

First cut out the diameter of the pit and then set the pit upside down in the hole. Trace around the square bottom. The hole for the pit diameter should to be as precise as you can make it. It would be ok to remove more foam than need when trimming the bottom.
You might be able to use a router to cut out the depth you need (and make a hellacious mess).

As for under the table remote switch machines in 2" foam you would have to use something like the Rix Rax. The switch rod on Atlas undertable switch machines won't be long enough. Another alternitive is the lever remote controls from the HUMP YARD.
