N scale remodel
Posted by wirta1 on Friday, November 9, 2012 7:46 PM

I was going to retire my N layout but decided to change it. I added 2  90 degree crossings and 2 turnouts to expand the layout further, I worked them in great. Turns out when i tried to run trains the main was shorted rail to rail. After cutting out the turnouts and some other bad rail, turned out to be one of the 90 degree crossings was shorted rail to rail. I will definately check any type of rail  before i install from now on.

Any suggestions on how to solder those spots i cut with a dremmel to find the short without melting ties.

Thanks for any help and i hope someone can learn from this.

If you use a jumper wire on both sides of the cut it will help dissipate the heat away from the ties. I use a piece of 18 guage wire with alligator clips on each end.Clip the wire to the rail. Ive melted a few ties before I learned this!Embarrassed
