I found a Bachmann Royal Blue N set. Any opinions ?
I was about to say bachmanns royal blue but seems you found it, I don't own it but my northern was a bachmann so be careful because after 3-4 months you may have to send it in for repairs, there are also roundhouse's 2-6-0's if you aren't a stickler for a particular loco. and model power also makes "americans" I don't own any model power locos yet so I can't really say anything on their quality.
SP&S modeler, 1960's give or take a decade or two for some equipment.

N scale model railroader
Hi BN#24 ! If I wanted to build an "N" scale running RR what is the minimum size module that I would have to build ? You know I always said that if ever got into model railroading again it would be "n" scale, if my bucket list dream of a large indoor/outdoor RR became impossible due to age or space requirements.
Well age (72 in a couple of weeks)has not yet become a problem but space maybe become one in the not to distant future.To be on the safe side I am beginning my dream RR with the indoor section first and that way I can transport it anywhere I go and still keep my dream alive.
Electric trains, as it was called back then, was my first hobby when I was only 5 years old in 1945 when my dad bought me a set after he returned from the war.My second set was an American Flyer that I got for Christmas around 1950.Looks like the third set will be "N" 62 years later. your welcome, I enjoy helping others MRRs and non MRRs, hmmmm.... module well so far the only exp. in that is a nearly complete layout on a 2x4 board... when I get my own house I was thinking of working in 2'x4' pieces so that way I can get track scenery etc. onto a board light enough to be carried out when I move... a 4'x8' board would also be good, I went with a 2'x4' board (thank you Mr. fujikawa for the idea) because it it essentially the N scale equivalent of a 4'x8' for HO.
Great! 2X4 sounds good to me,it will give me lots of options.Now I can plan where to put it and figure out a nice layout ,maybe buy some track. Cheers!
John.here is another consideration for your 2x4 modules to keep them light weight for easy moving.
If you haven't already considered it, Use Extruded foam {the pink or blue kind} over a 1/4" luan over an open grid system for your modules.
You can skip the luan, but if you plan for things like undermounted switch machines, they will need something to "bite into" when you screw them into place.
If the pink or blue extruded foam has a plastic coating onit, peel it off before using.
A heat knife is good for scuplting and the pink and blue can be sanded as well to sculpt it.
Now a lot of people find N scale to be "iNvisible" as they age and the eyes and dexterity aren't so good anymore. I hope you are not in that category!
