I am in a lucky position - if I want to see a layout even bigger than those 100´ by 100´ , I just take a 30 min. train ride to Miniatur Wunderland. Maintaining a layout of that size requires a crew of at least 5 people and I am talking only about maintenance, not construction! Can you imagine how much time you´d have to spend for track cleaning and dusting? Life has told me that happiness comes in small packages  I´d be more than happy if I had the means to build a 9´by 11´ layout.
