Tortoise switch machines and Peco switches - n scale
Posted by RScot on Friday, April 8, 2011 9:04 PM

i have been told that i need to adjust the spring mechanism on the Peco switch before i install the connection to the Tortoise switch machine. The switches that i am using are electrofrog and i am concerned that if i adjust the spring i will lose that solid connection to the rail that is powered. I hope that makes sense.

If i need to adjust the spring mechanism on the Peco switch how is that done exactly.

You don;t HAVE to, but with the spring in place you don;t get the slow motion operation of the Tortoise - once the tension on the throwbar wire exceeds that of the point spring, it just snaps over like it was using a solenoid type switch motor. The Tortoise is always powered up and pushing, so good contact would still remain without the spring. It's best to not rely ont he point to stock rail contact for power anywya, and instead use the switch contacts ont he Tortoise to provide the power past the points. The HO Peco Electroforgs have a wire in place to attach a feeder for this - I suspect the N scale ones are similar. As for the actual removal process, not sure, I don;t have any Peco turnouts.
