Track cleaning car
Posted by steamfreightboy on Tuesday, October 26, 2010 6:18 PM

Hi everyone,

I'm thinking about getting a track cleaning car and am wondering which one to get. I have heard many good things about the CMX and centerline cars but many people use masonite pad cars as well. I have been looking at the aztec cars for a while and they seem like they would work but I want to know for sure.Sigh

So many choices.

thanks for all the help.

Yes, it's a frequent topic.  I like my CMX car.  I use lacquer thinner as the solvent.  If past history is any guide, most people will support the CMX car as the best one.  It's also one of the most expensive ones, so if that's a consideration, be forewarned.

Mr. Beasley is correct.  The CMX cleaning car is the best, and the use of lacquer thinner is appropriate.  As he says, the CMX cleaning car is expensive, but you get what you pay for.

I think a lot depends on the size of your layout.  I have a 4 x 8 layout and a small 2 x 4 switching layout, both HO.  Buying a $100 plus track cleaning car didn't seem reasonable so I purchased the inexpensive Bachmann model.  It works just fine for me.

Unless you have a large layout with areas that you cannot reach to clean by hand, there's no need for you to purchase a track cleaning car -- hand cleaning does't take that much time and effort on a smaller layout.

I have a centerline track cleaner and have had good results with denatured alcohol.

However, there is no substitute for using a rag and your finger once in a while.  Also, a Q-tip on your switches.

Just my opinion.

Does the lacquer thinner have any effect on trackage with plastic ties?

Yes lacquer thinner does have an adverse effect on plastic.  Note that the CMX track clenaing car has a metal reservoir.  If used properly, the pad absorbs the lacquer thinner and dispenses it only on the metal rails.  Like all solvents, lacquer thinner requires caution, proper ventilation, and a careful reading of the instructions for use.

Hi Ray,

Just wondering if you got the track cleaning tank car with the " exclusive dry cleaning system features a reusable track cleaning pad". If so I have two questions

1. How do you clean the pad?

2. Have you found replacement pads?

Thanks

Yes, the CMX car is great,

But I've used another CMX part:

I've used the CMX cleaning pad and some brass parts.
