In search of a modern looking yard tower.
Posted by RiversideBNSF on Monday, August 16, 2010 3:55 PM

I have been looking for a modern looking yard tower that are used by most of the major roads (the large airport trafic control tower looking structures), but have been unsuccessful in my search. Any suggestions?

If you can wait a while, there will be a brass-etched model of the Barstow Yard Tower in both N and HO scales.

Unlike most structures, that one begs to have the interior modeled.

Jeff,

Hey neighbor, how goes it?

Can I see some pics of your layout with this tower? I really like that, I may get that for my yard.

Thanks,

Michael

Jeff, thanks for your input. I have never seen that one before and of course Walthers shows it is out of stock, go figure. LoL..

Riverside BNSF. I know it is toy like, but I do have a couple of these.

Being a Santa Fe fan and just getting in the hobby I bought two of them. With some work they might meet your needs. If you need a better picture let me know. I will never use them again so I would be happy to let one go.

Thanks Jeff.  Now I want one of those towers and I can't find it for sale anywhere. Geeez.

Nice layout, I like your Auto facility and intermodal yard, pretty sweet looking.

Jeff, thanks for posting those pics of your layout. Your intermodal yard is awesome and that building is freakin huge. What material did you use for your black top and concrete surfaces? Also, who makes your diesel house I see in the upper right hand corner? I like the looks of it. I agree, post more pics for us.

sweet i almost had the space you had but my wife made me put a movie theater and weightroom in the basement but i will settle for the 16' x 34' space i was allowed. but anyway nice layout and work you have done thus far. also do you have a site/webpage that has your layout in more depth.

Jeff,

The web site worked. All I have to say is WOW. I think your layout is fantastic. I only wish I could have that much room, but then again id probably be broke. I really like what you have done with the grain elevator by expanding it. I have just started building the same one and you have given me some great ideas. Thank you for sharing your progress with the rest of us. Keep up the good work.

I was searching for another type of structure and ran across a yard tower on Jaystrains.com:  it is #80 made by Suydam/California Models/Ayers Alpine.

I used to have one of those on my 4x8 layout when I was younger. Think it is a Model Power or Bachmann. It's probably still around somewhere at my parent;s house packed up in a box somewhere after the layout was dismantled. When I actually own a house of my own there's probably a bunch of old stuff to retrieve and go through.

The tower has no stair or ladded detail, so no visible way for your employees to get up there, and no interior in that big open glassed in cabin. So yeah, a fair bit of detail work would be needed to make it a serious model, but it could be a reasonable starting point for your "modern airport control tower style" yard tower that you'd like to have.
